  • Stock photo: Old train in Santa Teresa, a bohemian neighbourhood of Rio de Janeiro. Santa Teresa’s funicular horse cars, like its street cars, were built by the John Stephenson Co. in New York. The vehicle had General Electric equipment and a Peckham 8-B truck. The Santa Teresa Inclined Plane was inaugurated with the street railway on 13 March 1877. The system began at the top of the Santa Teresa Inclined Plane and was isolated from Rio de Janeiro’s other streetcar lines. The Ferro-Carril Carioca, established in 1891, replaced Santa Teresa’s horse trams with electric streetcars that crossed the disused aqueduct between Santa Teresa and Santo Antônio hills.
